ImageMagick and mogrify. : My command line tool for watermarking.

One fine day i decided i want “watermark” on my photos too, i know am not a great photographer but just for sake i wanted one.

I am too lazy to do anything from GUI so i searched a bit and came to know about ImageMagic and mogrify.

I simply installed it on my ubuntu box :-

sudo apt-get install imagemagik

Once i had it installed i decided using same watermark for all my images which which were lying in my directory at Desktop with name “foto”

I simply used the command :-

$ mogrify -font /usr/share/fonts/truetype/freefont/FreeSerifBoldItalic.ttf -pointsize 100 -verbose -draw "fill red text 24,75 '@koolhead17' " /home/atul/Desktop/foto/*.jpg
i am selecting a font, asking for verbose, drawing, filling it with red color text with mentioned size.

 I would highly recommend any one who is lazy as i am to give a try to imagemagik.

My first Ubuntu Cloud Days ..
	


	
	

		
Its been long time i blogged, this blog is about the amazing IRC session we had during 25-26 july.

Another thing i would like to tell is i participated as presenter as well as a student. Interesting session were taken by Ubuntu Cloud developers and from members of OpenStack Team. I took session on cloud-init, a Ubuntu cloud technology that enables a cloud instance to bootstrap itself and customize. It was one of the first experience for me thanks to for kicking me into this. I would say i need a lot of improvement before i present in next cloud days.


I loved all the sessions to start with kim0`sI have few bugs assigned under my belt which needs to be fixed.


I cannot say as which talk i liked most as all of them were equally awesome but i enjoyedthe most. I mean OpenStack project is so active, if you are out of it for a week or two get ready to be surprised. The whole OpenStack Dashboard is changed for example 🙂


I am looking forward to contribute to ensemble as i been following it for some time.


Other topics were Orchestra, UEC, eucalyptus.

What i want to See in my Google plus : wishlist
	


	
	

		
To start with neither Google has paid me to write this nor i dislike WebEx or Facebook. Google has always changed the technology tread and yes they failed too sometime, like Google Wave.

                                             I love Google and its most important part of my web life. I got google plus and i was thrilled to see many features like circles, streams and hangouts. I can easily create a circle with college friends, office friends, family and stream my stuff to them. cool stuff, i always wanted that in facebook. 🙂


So there is another feature which interests me most its hangout. I can invite a particular circle of mine and all of us can chat/talk and share cam. Its just fantastic. 🙂


What i see google plus is  :–


1. A tool/platform more than just a social media.

2. Google Plus can be used easily to provide online education to millions of poor kids sitting in Africa and Asia.

3. It can be used as a tool for live question answer session for “President`s” address to public. (hoping some day white house joins and adds people to Circle ) 😀

4. Provide private companies there own circle to use plus as social media along with strong interaction tool.

5. Most of the NGO needs a platform for spreading the word and google plus will be best hangout.


What all features (wishlist) i want integrated in google plus :- 


1. Integration of slideshow inside google hangout. I wonder why there is no slides.google.com ?  When google docs is capable of converting everything as slides why/what is stopping it from this?

2. Remote screen sharing.

3. Online Chat classification on basis of circles and feature to be available for only desired groups. (its doable i know, some tweak with ejabbed which google uses)

4. Wikipedia page listing like “sparks” 🙂


I know we human are always in desire of something more, and since  Google is god  we can get everything from there. 😀


I will add more wish list as i explore google plus more. 😀

Well its over month we at Csscorp , my current workplace released a complete beginners guide on the deployment of Openstack for Ubuntu natty.

Report: ilug chennai meet & natty release party
	


	
	

		
I been traveling across colleges and places in India so from now onwards i will be putting all details and information about it on my blog. I been escaping it for a while.


Its been almost 3 months for me in Chennai and finally i attended LUG-Chennai meet up. Thanks to Srini for giving me lift for the venue as am yet to become familiar will bus routes in Chennai.


Before reaching at venue we got chips, coke and some other snacks for the meetup as we were celebration natty release party. I was very happy to see a gathering of around 40 people at the venue.




 


There were some other talks as well like government of India spoken-tutorial initiative and a student giving introduction to google`s GO programming language.




 


 


 


 


 


 


 


 


 


Lastly we had a our youngest member took the dias and spoke about natty and its feature with a slide exceeding 150 pages 🙂


I liked the way he demonstrated natty and told others about Unity and other major improvement in the release.


One of the most important thing that happened during the meetup was that we had an uninvited guest a “Monkey”, yes he was in the party too. I offered him some chips and he eat it with fun 😀




Overall i would say although i missed most of the old fellows of Ilug-Chennai as srini was the oldest of the present members there.


I hope to meet them regularly now for the meetup.

	


	





	

		
Moved to Lucid !!
	


	
	

		
All this while since 2008 i was happily using Hardy on my laptop but since the official support is getting over soon i preferred reinstalling from fresh. I was thinking to install 10.10 but today only i came to know that my CD drive is nomore. Thanks to USB boot, i managed to have get Lucid working on my ACER 5920 laptop.


The only place where i was stuck at is the mic was not working after googling i came to know that my Codec: Realtek ALC1200 and solution to that is adding 2 lines in my alsa config file.


$sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf


options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=1

options snd-hda-intel model=auto


Restarting ALSA (sudo alsa force-reload) and also checking alsamixture 2 confirm if mic in muted.

	


	





	

		
Python Local Enviornment setup on Ubutnu
	


	
	

		
I have never coded in my life so its time to learn and do sumthing !!

In my previous Job where i was supposed to code in Python and i was not quick enough to do that, i came to know about this Virtualenv funda. 


We need a virtual environment so that we can install certain Python software which we need for specific application, like Python Django framework which has its on deps and which might break other current apps which uses older version of it.


sudo apt-get install python-virtualenv 


Suppose you want to create a directory name “pywrk” and this to work on your python virtual environment simply map this directory to virtualenv


$pwd

/home/atul/pywrk

$which python

/usr/bin/python


Lets setup virtualenv now for this directory

$ virtualenv ~atul/pythonwrk/

$ source ~atul/pythonwrk/bin/activate


So we have our own python local environment setup. We can install modify add all packages inside this directory and it will be served for our local environment.

	


	





	

		
spellchecker in (OO) open-office  on ubuntu !!
	


	
	

		
After 2 hrs of brain storming on weekend in my office finally got spell checker working for my open office 3.2 on ubuntu 10.04. i had to take expert help from Hobbes, nigleb and lastly Indranil dada and it worked.


sudo apt-get install hunspell  myspell-en-us openoffice.org-help-en-us


Once this is installed  open a open office document and TOOLS -> OPTIONS –> LANGUAGES


 




Once this is done check WRITING AIDS and do as screen shot does. 


Restart your open-office and you will have spell checker working.
